The Citron Robe
The Citron Robe is inspired by the nonna’s house coat. For many of the families in the archive, the nonna was the backbone, running the kitchen, the household and often the farm, and her house coat was the uniform of that work. Here it is remade in luminous silk, with enlarged painted lemon slices drifting across a yellow ground, their translucent qualities echoing the delicacy of the cloth.
The turquoise sash comes from the packing shed. Fruit across the Riverina travels on blue belts as it is washed, sorted, graded and packed, and that colour runs through the working lives recorded in the archive. Here the belt becomes a sash, wrapping the body the way the line carries the fruit. The robe brings together the two places the work of this region happens, the home and the shed, and treats both as part of the same record.
